California Highway Patrol Makes Major Push to Combat Distracted Driving in Santa Clarita and Throughout California

The California Highway Patrol is not playing any games when it comes to raising awareness about the dangers to California drivers and residents of distracted driving. This month, in honor of April National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the California Highway Patrol is not only sending the message to California drivers and residents that they need to get off of their cell phones and focus on the road, but California Highway Patrol officers also took to the streets in a special enforcement period to get distracted drivers off of the road.

According to local news reports reporting on the story, in order to ramp up their efforts to drive down distracted driving in California, the California Highway Patrol participated in what was called a “Maximum Enforcement Period,” which lasted from 6:00 a.m. to 5:59 p.m. on April 2. As part of the Maximum Enforcement Period, California Highway Patrol officers from across California focused primarily on distracted drivers, such as those drivers that were using their cell phones while driving. Reports indicate that “During the enforcement period, officers from the CHP issued nearly 14,000 citations, with over 3,200 being for violations of California’s hands-free driving laws. In addition, officers provided more than 2,400 warnings to drivers, reinforcing the importance of focused driving.” California Highway Patrol Commissioner Sean Duryee said of the dangers of distracted driving, “Distracted driving is one of the most preventable dangers on our roads, yet it continues to put lives at risk every day…During this enforcement effort, every uniformed member of our department was out on patrol, ensuring drivers stayed focused and made responsible choices behind the wheel.” The CHP reminds California residents and drivers that distracted driving does not only include using a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle, but also includes “activities like eating, reaching for objects, or adjusting the radio.” The CHP notes that “that these distractions significantly increase the risk of accidents.”
