California Updates Laws to Prohibit Holding Cell Phones While Driving, Switches to “No Touch” Cell Phone Law to Prevent Distracted Driving Car Accidents

For some time now, state lawmakers, members of city government, non-profit organizations, communities, and even single individuals have been fighting for protections from distracted drivers, particularly those that choose to use their cell phone while driving. Indeed, the call for action to shore up distracted driving safety efforts and make California – and Santa Clarita – streets safer could never be more timely, as distracted driving car accidents ravage Santa Clarita families virtually every day. The good news is that authorities in California are listening, and new laws have been recently put on the books that aim to reduce the number of serious and fatal distracted driving car accidents in the state.

According to local news reports, at the beginning of this month, a new law went into effect in California that, simply put, prohibits drivers from touching their phones while engaging in the act of driving, or “being behind the wheel.” The implementation of the new distracted driving law makes California one of 31 states that are strengthening distracted driving car accident prevention efforts by implementing a “No Touch” cell phone law.

California officials are hailing the new “No Touch” phone law as an effective car accident prevention measure. Officer DC Williams of the California Highway Patrol said of the new law, “I hope [with] this new law in place that we do see a reduction in crashes…I hope we see less tickets coming in from people driving distracted, and that the point gets across that, hey, this just needs to stop.” Officer Williams added, “When you’re looking away, even for that short moment, you’re taking your focus off the traffic in front of you…Just for that split second that you’re looking down at that point in your hand and then back up, traffic in front of you could be stopped by that time, and you may end up in an unfortunate accident.”

Getting Legal Help After You are Injured in a Serious Distracted Driving Car Accident

It is important for Santa Clarita drivers and their families to know that they are also protected under California personal injury laws, in the case that they are injured due a distracted driver’s unlawful and negligent conduct. When a person in Santa Clarita is injured by a distracted driver who was on their cell phone, they are entitled to file a lawsuit in court against the distracted driver for money compensation for their injuries and losses. There is a limited time to bring a personal injury claim for your distracted driving car accident injuries in Santa Clarita, so it is best to speak with a lawyer as soon as possible about your case.
