Hatchet Attack on Bollywood Actor in California Gym Underscores Potential Safety Issues in Fitness Facilities

Gym

In 2023, several sexual assault attacks in fitness facilities and gyms went viral, spreading both fear and awareness of the dangers that gym patrons may face when simply trying to get in a workout. In March, 2023, another type of gym attack occurred in California, against a male gym patron who was simply going through the motions of his workout routine. According to local news reports, the victim of the attack, 36-year-old Aman Dhaliwal, or “Arman” as he calls himself on social media, was at the Corona, California Planet Fitness on March 21, when he was approached by a man with a hatchet, which has also been described as a tomahawk-style weapon. In a video obtained of the incident, the attacker, later identified as 30-year-old Ronald Chand of Santa Ana, California, can be seen grabbing Arman’s arm with the tomahawk in the same hand, and then brandishing a knife in his other hand as he screams at Arman and other patrons in the gym, “Please, respect us. Give me water. I need water! You want to take advantage of me!”

Arman is said to have remained calm and ultimately tackled Chand to the ground, at which point other gym patrons rushed to his assistance to subdue Chand. However, in the attack, Chand stabbed Arman several times. Some reports indicate that the attack actually started in the parking lot. Arman was taken to the hospital with several stab wounds to his upper body, and he was covered in blood. Chand was taken to the Robert Presley Detention Center and was charged with the crime of attempted murder. Although the incident was still under investigation at the time of the reports, it bears mentioning that Arman is a famous actor in the Punjabi and Bollywood scene.

Gyms Patrons Remain Unsafe when Gyms Fail to Implement Adequate Security

When a person is attacked in a gym or fitness center, it begs the question whether the gym or fitness center implemented proper security measures to keep gym patrons safe. Under California premises liability laws, gym and fitness center owners, like other business owners, owe a duty of care to invitees that they invite onto their property and business. If a gym or fitness center, or other type of business, fails to implement proper security measures and, as a result, a gym patron is injured, the injured gym customer may have claims against not only the attacker, but also the business or property owner for their injuries. In order to determine whether you may have a claim for compensation due to injuries that you sustained on a business property due to negligent security on the part of the business or property owner in Palmdale, it is best to speak as soon as possible with an experienced Palmdale negligent security lawyer as soon as possible about your rights and options.
